What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
