US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths

As stated by a high-ranking military official, the American armed forces executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.

“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Strikes

The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Actions Amid Pressure

The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.

While the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
