The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been discovered inside freezers in an apartment in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for a number of months, were detected on Friday. The freezers were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the Syrian woman, told authorities last week that there had been an accident—but disputed murder.

Informing journalists recently, a representative for the legal authorities announced the pair were being held on "high likelihood of homicide".

Personal details of those implicated have not been disclosed by law enforcement, in following Austrian law.

The family's disappearance was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Police stated the woman's colleague claimed at the time she had gone on an long journey with her daughter to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.

Her bank card was then noted as being active overseas several times.

However when officers entered the woman's home, her cellphone was located.

A witness also stated hearing a commotion in the apartment, and cries of "mum" on the date the mother and child were thought to have disappeared.

A wider police investigation was launched, with authorities uncovering several texts sent from the woman's phone—among them a notice of quitting to her company and texts to the male colleague.

Authorities confirmed a significant cash transfer was also sent to the man.

Katja Tersch informed the press on that day that a storage unit had been rented out before the vanishing and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.

The brothers extracted the appliance from the facility on the date the victims disappeared, the official stated. And a seven days after, they obtained another freezer.

Authorities believe they consider this indicates the demise were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death could not be determined due to the advanced decay of the remains," the official said.

The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—said the exact sequence of events is still unclear, but the bodies were professionally hidden and were not found during a earlier inspection.

While the men were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the 55-year-old admitted to an event and to concealing the remains. He denies any plan to cause death, authorities confirmed.

Meanwhile, his 53-year-old sibling confessed to a concealment but disputed awareness of a killing.

The two suspects are presently in custody awaiting trial in prisons in two Austrian cities, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the abrupt and violent termination of two individuals and exposes a heartless setup".

"Female individuals are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are of the female gender," they continued.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must combat firmly."
