Pick of the Week
The Substance
The filmmaker's daring critique tackles the demanding standards for female beauty and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore presents a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity demoted to hosting an aerobics show on television. Pushed out by her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself called Sue, culminating in a progressively parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10
This suspenseful thriller features Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a hiatus from writing about global conflict to board a high-end voyage alongside a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her husband, plus additional filthy rich guests. But after an enigmatic female falls into the sea overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Out now, the Netflix platform
Presence Film
The acclaimed director tests his creative boundaries with this nifty supernatural story shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of sensing the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the intelligence agency to investigate the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong even without a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has rendered the youth anxious. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, however Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a traitor among the team from a group of five – among them is his own wife. Both actors are experts of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
