This Special Release Pokémon Card Aims to Be Super Effective On Speculators

To celebrate the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership has been formed. The Pokémon Company and London's Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store featuring special items. Fans will find offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork that are inspired by the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, however, will be a specially made Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. This shop will operate both on-site at the museum and online from January 26 to April 19.

The Book That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited tome filled with stunning artwork that show creatures in their wild environments. It's essentially like what an in-world scientist could produce after adventurers provide field notes, or what Charles Darwin might have created had the Galapagos teemed with Pidgeys instead of finches. Part of the charm stems from the book's scholarly approach, presenting Pokémon as worthy of scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

Why This Special Card Stand Out

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company special edition cards for major tournaments and crossover partnerships. Many such collector items typically highlight the famous electric rodent who serves as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new museum card is its distinctly bigger dimensions. Although exact measurements were not immediately shared, its distribution is guaranteed to be highly restricted, and customers able to get just one card per purchase.

Curbing Reseller Interest

Per a company announcement, a portion of the merchandise may also be available outside the institution itself. However, a wider release will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Critically, fans will not be able to acquire this promo through the online Pokémon Center. Although reseller interest is a given, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. If you're feeling left out, there is an alternative like Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"All profits of sales made in the Museum shop and from its online store, including these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. That encompasses the efforts of 400 scientists dedicated to conducting studies and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement notes.
