The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
