The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, did not confirm this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
