A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
