Putin Assures Continuous Energy Deliveries to India in Defiance of US Pressure

During a unambiguous statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “unbroken” supplies of oil to India. The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Signal Aimed at the United States

This affirmation, delivered Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at Washington, which have sought to compel New Delhi into reducing its close ties with Moscow. The context is in response to earlier Washington's moves, including additional trade penalties on India over its buying of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy source of energy resources and everything required for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president said. “We are ready to continue securing the steady supply of resources for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without mentioning oil specifically, supported the focus by saying that “a stable energy base has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

In the lead-up to the summit, during a television interview, Putin had criticized American pressure regarding India's energy purchases. Putin stated, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India have the same privilege?”

This trip was his initial journey to India since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides made a deliberate attempt to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the men was undisturbed.

A Warm Greeting

In a unusual step, Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders shared a warm hug like close allies before enjoying a closed-door supper together.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “built on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Partnerships

Friday's talks resulted in multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and economic cooperation. One significant result was the signing of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which targets to increase twofold bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD each year by the end of the decade.

Furthermore pledged to recalibrate their defence ties. While Russia continues to be India's biggest source of defence equipment, its share has reduced over the past decade as India works to broaden its procurement.

Their communique stressed an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge military systems, though explicit details of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

In conclusion, Russia and India restated that during the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, their relationship continue to be strong to outside forces.”
