A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
