A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
