Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
