Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
