RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
