A large-scale search and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing boats transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Operations Initiated

Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to find the missing boats, which were carrying at least 9 crew members, per a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety equipment and communication devices," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Recent Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Climate

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with over 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Political tensions have increased in recent months, with statements from several leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding relations.

Responding to previous statements, a prominent government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its disposal to locate the boats and secure the safety of the people on board.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
